This is my first journal entry. I'd like to share a decision I made tonight.

I'm a male, and although I've never personally witnessed violence against women, I find the subject appalling. I find myself similarly moved by women who suffer from low self-esteem or who experience damaging negative judgement for not fitting whatever given social meme (all the usual excuses for discrimination, ostracism and bullying of every kind). It just all feels intensely wrong, and always has.
(This does not imply I don't know the same issues affect men).
Today I read the news and once again there's a story about yet another act of violence against women ... a particularly unpleasant one ... and ... I've finally had it. Something within just broke.

Here is my decision. Beginning today, I pledge to:
* Get involved in meaningful and ongoing ways with these issues - didn't anticipate my future would hold social activism, but it does now!
* Build or enhance a network of people - on dA and beyond - who care about these things. Maybe I should create a new group? I haven't seen one that covers all the things I'm writing about, but many with some overlap.
* Create art and writing which spreads awareness, inspires dialogue, offers some measure of hope and empowerment to people. Survivors and thrivers, NOT victims!
* As I grow as an artist and writer, I am going to take some proceeds from my work and give it to groups who are involved with these issues. I hope to inspire others to do the same.
* Whatever I learn, I will share with others, to generate synergy.

I'm feeling tremendous excitement ... and also apprehension, because I'm starting with a lot of good intentions, no experience, and only a vague idea of where to go from here.
I would be delighted to hear your suggestions: please comment or note me if you have tips, dA groups to suggest, websites to visit, and/or wish to join forces - which would be very much appreciated. Let's rock that network!!!

Independent, empowered, self-actualized women = the way the world should be; suffering, disempowered, marginalized and abused women = way too frequent! I feel driven to promote that better world. WHO IS WITH ME??
